One of the things that excited me about moving to Idaho was the idea of living in the Rocky Mountains. That was one region of the country that I hadn't had much contact with. But it wasn't what I thought it was going to be like at all. I was thinking of tall trees and mountain streams.

Here's the thing though. As I was driving back and forth to Minnesota this summer, I found myself traveling through Montana and Wyoming, and boy, did I get what I was looking for, and then some.

Now that's what I'm talking about.

Stunning countryside. This one is in Montana, and just over that ridge is Wyoming, where things got even more beautiful. The pictures I have don't even begin to scratch the surface. (Get this. I forgot the memory card for my camera. Luckily, I was able to use the camera on my cell phone, but the quality went way down. Thank God for editing software.)

I hadn't had an adventure since last summer, so I've certainly made up for lost time in the last several weeks. Boy, do I have a story for you! ;)

Hodgepodge

What could be better to get me back in to the blogging swing of things than Hodgepodge?  Joyce over at From This Side of the Pond hosts this meme that has some interesting questions each week. Do you want to play?

1. Aloha! On August 21, 1959 Hawaii officially became a US state. Have you ever been? Upon arrival would you prefer an orchid or a hibiscus to tuck behind your ear?
I had the great pleasure of going to Maui some years ago. What a magical experience. Even if some of it was cliche, it felt like being in a favorite movie or something. I'll go with the hibiscus behind my ear.

2. Since we're talking tropical...what's your favorite food or beverage made with pineapple?
Actually, I prefer it in the raw, so I'm going to say fruit salad. Unless, we're talking exotic cocktails. Then, I might be open to some experimentation. ;)

3. Do you believe in soul mates? Explain.
I don't know if I actually believe in them, or I want to believe in them. I've seen some couples that absolutely clicked with each other. I've also experienced a couple of friendships where it felt like I've known the person all my life even though we've just met. (And, I'm not talking about meeting online friends in real life. That's special and amazing in a completely different way.)

4. Share a memory about the house you grew up in.
The house I grew up in ... I lived in a lot of different places, a lot of different houses (or apts) during that time period, but there is one that I became attached to far more that the rest. We only lived there for two years, but in a way, it seemed like a lifetime. It was an idealized pastoral vision that would be appreciated by Emerson, Thoreau, Wordsworth, etc. Just to start, we had a garden that had a wide variety of fruit trees. There were overgrown raspberry bushes and lilac bushes to die for. Oh, it was fun to be a kid in the summer time there.

5. Are you comfortable with silence?
Yes. ;)

6. You spot a giant spider on your bedroom wall...what's your next move? (all spiders are giant, right?)
Determine which way it's moving and how I can get out of the room to get something to deal with it. ("Deal with it" can mean a variety of things depending how brave I'm feeling at that particular moment.)

7. My idea of fun does NOT include ______________.
Bungee jumping. Those cords seem to have gotten a bit stretched out over the years. I'm starting to hear of more and more problems with them. Heck, I got the willies during the first few jumps of the high platform diving at the Olympics, and that was on tv!

8. Insert your own random thought here. 
Last weekend I went to the Grand Tetons Nat'l Park as a kind of last hurrah before the end of the summer season. Really beautiful country. More people need to visit Wyoming. It really is stunning.

Almost Ready

Hello everyone! I can't believe that it's been over a month since I posted last. I have several excellent excuses for part of it, but for the past couple of weeks, it's mostly been that I couldn't bear sitting in front of a computer after I came home in the evening.

However in the meantime, I've had some wonderful adventures that I want to share. Most of these have are related to my recent visit to the City of Lakes, Minneapolis, Minnesota.


Soon and very soon, I'll be ready to play again.

Get Away from It All

Have you ever just wanted to lay back on your bed and watch the world go by? At the Igloo Village at Hotel Kakslauttanen, you can do just that.


This Finnish resort hotel above the Arctic Circle features glass igloos to give visitors the opportunity to watch the Aurora Borealis or the Northern Lights.

If you feel a little too exposed to be able to settle down for your long winter's nap, they have snug cabins too, as well as all sorts of outdoor winter activities: Winter Safari's, Ice Karting (Think Go-Kart), and even Snow shoeing. However, I may have to hold judgment on their claim that "there is nothing more relaxing than diving into an ice-hole."  Refreshing? Perhaps. :)  "Relaxing?" Really?

If it's all the same to you, I think that I'll stay in my room and gaze at the stars.

Where in the World ...

Before I got sidetracked by Chinese traffic circles (They were the bane of my driving existence in Washington D.C.), I had been looking at some sample pictures that came with my computer. They included the Taj Mahal, the Pyramids of Egypt, and the Eiffle Tower at night. I wouldn't be surprised if they were on your computer too.

Naturally, as I clicked through the pictures, I thought about how nice it would be to visit some of these places. Some of them, I've already been lucky enough to visit. But then I thought, Where would I like to go the most? Someplace I had never been before.

Since I got sidetracked on a Chinese traffic circle, you have probably already guessed that my special destination is in China. Since I did my senior thesis on 19th Century China, I have developed rather a soft spot for the place. 5,000 years of history before Europeans arrived and messed with it.

The Li River is especially attractive to me for some reason. I have seen it from time to time in films. I have never seen topography like this before. It seems so beautiful to me. I long to go there.


Here's where it is relative to the rest of the country.


So, where is the one place in the world ... someplace that you've never been before ... that you would like to go?
